Overview & Tasting Notes

The wine is floral fruit in youth, which moves towards biscuity characters with age. The palate is generally softer bodied with smoother acids than the Vat 1 and Belford Semillons

The Hunter Valley and semillon grapes combine to make one of the world’s great white wines. The grapes have a piercing acidity and freshness when young and they age very well. This vineyard —planted in 1908 by the Hunter Valley Distillery Company — is considered the place for this regional classic.

I tasted a selection of top Hunter Valley- based Tyrrell’s Single Vineyard semillons recently. The winery and its vineyards are without peer when it comes to making semillons in the region. It virtually scoops all the major awards for this white variety, with grapes grown on vineyards dating back to 1911 and before.

The 2009 HVD Semillon offers lime and herbs on the nose which also show through on the palate. A fine texture and acid to match.

  • Ray Jordan on Sat, November 29th 2014

93 Points -A restrained and still very young semillon retaining a fresh and zippy feel in the mouth. Lovely acid with a twist of lemon on the finish. Fine and precise, with a very long finish. Has good cellaring potential.

  • James Halliday (2015 Wine Companion) on Tue, September 30th 2014

94 Points - Glowing straw green. It looks and then tastes electric. Rich but lively. Lime, honey, green herbs, whispers of fennel and lanolin. Time has brought an attractive satiny texture. Length is assured. In immaculate shape.

This is made from grapevines planted in 1908 by the Hunter Valley Distillery Company, in a Hunter vintage described as near-perfect. It’s just starting to emerge from, the cocoon that probably made it near unapproachable in its youth and is an absolute joy to drink.

  • Lisa Perrotti-Brown on

92 Points - The 2009 HVD Semillon explodes with aromas of waxy lemon and lime zest plus nuances of coriander and cumin seeds and a dusting of chalk. Very crisp and nervy. Plenty of citrusy flavor intensity. A little mineral. Long finish.
