Land Management & Sustainability

The vast majority of Tyrrell’s vineyards are non-irrigated. Having such a high proportion (approximately 90%) of our vineyard dry-grown is a highly sustainable form of agriculture. It means our water usage is low, which helps the environment significantly during drought conditions, and also means the land is not being “salted up” with salts from irrigation water. The fact that Tyrrells have a number of vineyards that have been producing quality winegrapes continuously for well over a century now is proof that our vineyard management practices are highly sustainable

Additionally, Tyrrell’s retain a high proportion of natural woodland on the majority of its land holdings, with approximately 25% of our land covered in native trees.

Soil improvement practices are also implemented, with composted grape marc re-used on the vineyard as mulch (thereby also conserving water), and organic manures also used.
