Jane, John & Chris Tyrrell

Bruce and Pauline Tyrrell’s three children Jane, John and Chris, have grown up around the Tyrrell’s winery just as their father and grandfather did. From childhood days earning pocket money working in the business, all three are now instrumental in directing Tyrrell’s as a modern Australian wine company, while maintaining the integrity of continued family ownership.
The Tyrrell family has been producing outstanding wines in the Hunter Valley since 1858, and are one of the oldest and most successful family owned wineries in the Hunter Valley.
Fifth generation family member, Jane Tyrrell, has grown up in the winery, just as her father Bruce and grandfather Murray did. From childhood days earning pocket money working in the cellar door and office, Jane always knew she wanted to join the family business.
Jane officially joined the business in 2001, working as a personal assistant to the Sales Manager. Jane then joined the NSW sales team as a rep, next moving to key accounts manager then to the position of NSW State Sales Manager in 2008. After getting married in 2012 and moving to regional NSW, Jane returned to looking after key on premise accounts. Working from the ground up has given Jane an appreciation of all aspects of the business.
“Taking our wine to the people who buy it is the most rewarding experience,” Jane says.
“What I learn from the trade and consumers, I pass on directly to my father Bruce, my brother Chris, and the winemaking team. The closeness of our operation, and the family nature of it, means we can consistently make wines that are relevant to the drinking public.”
Jane is also the chairperson of Tyrrell’s Wines executive committee and is actively involved in other aspects of the company’s operations from winemaking and production to marketing and administration.
With the fifth generation involved in the business, Tyrrell’s will continue to remain one of the pre-eminent family owned wine companies of Australia.
John Tyrrell also works in the winery in a role his father, Bruce, refers to as Minister for Morale. “John keeps things in line for the winemaking team and ensures crew members always have a smile on their faces.”
Chris Tyrrell is the fifth generation of Tyrrell family winemaking dynasty, alongside his sister Jane and brother John.
Chris began his winery apprenticeship in 2001 at age 18, the first vintage after the passing of his grandfather and Australian winemaking legend Murray Tyrrell.
From then on Chris has worked with his family’s wine company. In between vintages he worked in the sales and marketing department until the end 2005 when he returned to work full time in the winery.
From 2006 through 2014 Chris was the assistant winemaker working with two of the great modern day Hunter Valley winemakers, Chief Winemaker Andrew Spinaze and Red Winemaker Mark Richardson.
In late 2014 Chris was promoted to the role of Chief Operating Officer, overseeing all facets of production at the Hunter Valley winery and vineyard.
In recent years Chris and the rest of the Tyrrell’s winemaking team have focused heavily on improving, and in some cases reinventing their classic regional styles and single vineyard sites. Specifically the flagship semillon and shiraz wines from some of the worlds oldest vineyards.
Chris is also an active judge in the Australian wine show circuit and has also recently completed the Winemakers Federation of Australia “Future Leaders” Program which focuses on developing the next generation of Australian wine industry leaders.
In May 2012, Chris was named “Rising Star” at the Hunter Valley Wine Industry Association Legends Awards – an award which recognises young talent in the Hunter Valley.
In November 2012 Chris was a scholar at the Len Evans Tutorial, what is said to be the “most exclusive wine school in the world”.
Now 36, Chris will continue to ensure that the family winemaking legend continues for one of the world’s great wine families.
