Waste Management & Recycling
Tyrrell’s have implemented a systematic recycling program to ensure as much recyclable waste as possible is collected and segregated into different waste streams, for effective recycling.
This includes grape waste, winemaking waste, waste paper, glass, plastic, cardboard, timber, aluminum, steel, non-ferrous metals, and waste oil.
Over the past 3 years, this recycling program has resulted in a 60% reduction in the amount of solid waste sent to landfill.
• All packaging waste is collected, segregated, and sent off-site for recycling. This includes glass bottles, cardboard cartons & dividers, plastic pallet covers & shrinkwrapping.
• No cardboard carton dividers are used at all in our more commercial range of wines, to minimize the amount of packaging used
• All wooden pallets and masonite pallet dividers are collected and returned to the manufacturer for re-use
• Waste paper throughout the company is collected in separate bins for recycling
• All plastic, cardboard and paper waste is compressed into large bales on site for easy transportation to the recycler
• Waste aluminum (from wine screw caps and soft drink cans in lunch rooms) is recycled
• Waste metal from construction and maintenance is collected, segregated by type, and sent off to metal recyclers
• Waste oils from vineyard vehicles and plant machinery are collected by a contractor for waste oil recycling
Winery waste is organic and contains no heavy metals or toxins. The waste stream comprises solids left over from fermentation and winemaking, including grape pectins, proteins, tartrates, and yeast. These solids are separated in our wastewater plant, then mixed with our organic waste from grape processing, before being composted for 12 months and then re-used as vineyard mulch. The clarified liquid waste is irrigated out over our surrounding paddocks, resulting in healthy growth of native vegetation.
Since our EMS program was launched, considerable work has been done to upgrade our wastewater system, so it now runs far more efficiently and with significantly less odour produced. The wastewater is analysed on a routine basis, as are the soils onto which they are irrigated, to monitor the performance of the wastewater treatment plant and ensure any environmental impacts are minimal.
All grape marc (skins, seeds and stems) is recycled by collecting it from crush and fermentation, then composting it for 12 months and re-using it as mulch in the vineyard.
