The 2021 Estate Grown Shiraz is a blend from our Short Flat, Weinkeller, and NVC Vineyards. These dry grown blocks were planted in 1968, 1970 and 1996.

The autumn and winter months of 2020 saw the worst drought in a generation be broken with substantial rainfall, we led into an outstanding growing season for the 2021 vintage. A cool summer then gave us even, stress-free ripening with some heat around Australia Day that was perfectly timed at the final stages of ripening. With an early budburst and later than normal harvesting, the fruit had a longer than normal hang time, which meant that all of the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity. Fermented in stainless steel open top vats, the fruit was destemmed but not crushed, ensuring as many whole berries as possible were in the fermenter. All blocks were fermented separately and matured in mostly newer large format French Oak (2,700L) and some barriques (225L) until November 2021, when they were blended to create the Estate Grown blend. No finings were used.

Medium colour density with a bright purple hue. The aromatic profile is deeper and darker than the classic Tyrrell’s red summer fruits. The palate is medium bodied with the classic Hunter Valley fruit and acid profile, giving the wine a wonderful freshness. These three blocks produce a modern style of Shiraz that has both richness and approachability and pays homage to the classic Hunter River Burgundies (HRB) of the mid-twentieth century.

Alcohol – 13.5%
Cellaring – 5-10 years

Tobacco, ash and dark berry with black pepper and white pepper aromas and flavors. Mediumbodied with integrated tannins and succulent fruit. Clean earth and dusty notes come through here. (October 2022)
