Overview & Tasting Notes

Vat 1 Hunter Semillon epitomised the benefits of patient bottle ageing that transforms this unoaked wine into a masterpiece.

First produced in 1963, the Vat 1 is fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks before it quietly spends a few years 'resting' in bottles.

It is a classic Hunter Valley semillon showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus fruit flavours. This wine is only just beginning to evolve and show a hint of toasty, bottle aged complexity. An iconic Australian wine from what is a classic vintage for Hunter Valley semillon.

  • James Halliday (Australian Wine companion 2015) on Tue, September 30th 2014

96 Points - An exceptionally youthful 5-year-old wine, even by the standards of Semillion; cut grass, herb, lemongrass and a strong minerally thrust drive the long palate. The end-point of its development is anyone’s guess.

  • Robert Parker on

94 Points- The 2009 Vat 1 Semillon already possesses an intensely scented nose of lime juice and lime leaf with coriander seed, dill and crushed stone nuances. Quite a bit of white pepper and mineral character coming through on the palate and lots of mouth-wateringly citrusy fruit. Crisp. Very long.

I had a 2006 last weekend - a big but pleasant mistake. Needs up to another 10 years - at the moment it is just too young, very pale colour and subdued nose and light on the palate. Still, it was a very nice drink but I will have to be patient in future.
