Winemaker's Selection
Tyrrell’s Winemaker’s Selection is one of Australia’s oldest and most awarded collection of wines, adhering to timeless
styles that transcend trends and fads.
These five individual wines, all originate from Tyrrell’s finest and oldest vineyards around the historic Pokolbin winery in the Hunter Valley, in New South Wales.
Each wine follows a Vat numbering system, stemming from the still present large oak maturation vessels that Bruce Tyrrell’s forebears used. The Vat number represents the cask that the wine was either fermented or matured in.
These wines are all released with an excellent starting bottle age, but have the ability to gracefully develop further in the bottle for many more years. Each one of the Winemaker’s Selection wines is unambiguously designed to surpass ordinary ageing criteria – indeed every one of these wines has an established track record of bottle ageing.
A number of factors set these wines apart – acid structure, length of flavour and the age of

Double Barrel 24
The Tyrrell family are proud to release their new super Shiraz, DB24. This wine represents a new approach to red winemaking at Tyrrell’s. The concept for DB24 was to create a contempory Shiraz that still maintains the Tyrrell stamp of finesse and elegance.
Approximately 90% of the Shiraz grapes were sourced from McLaren Vale, and picked to have both the extract and fleshiness of fruit typical of the region. Approximately 10% of Heathcote Shiraz was blended back to the base wine to add structure and finesse. The double new oak maturation for 12 months each, is the derivation of the name DB24.

Single Vineyard
These wines are only ever made in years when nature contrives to produce fruit of such outstanding quality that our winemakers will set these parcels aside to be separately bottled as small, single vineyard batches.
Hunter wines are best consumed with bottle age and thus these wines are released with at least two years bottle age.
It is this age component, small quantities and intense flavours that set these wines apart and the main reason why they have developed the status that they rightly hold.

Rufus Stone
Tyrrell’s historic association with the “Rufus Stone” has been utilised for our top non-Hunter regional red wines, from our vineyards in Heathcote (Victoria), McLaren Vale and the Limestone Coast (South Australia).
The Rufus Stone wines have been major contributors to our continuing success on the National Wine Show circuit both in Australia and abroad, allowing the winemakers to forge ahead with red wine styles and oak maturation techniques not normally used for traditional Hunter Valley wines.

Lost Block
Tyrrell's Lost Block was named following the 1993 vintage when it was mistakenly allowed to ripen for a longer period than usual.
An impending storm and our vineyard workers were hurried out of Tyrrell's HVD (Hunter Valley Distillery) vineyard to pick less storm resistant fruit. Some weeks later our vineyard manager (whom shall remain nameless) discovered to his horror, a very ripe unpicked block of Semillon.
The Lost Block wines are deliberately made to be fruit-laden, fresh and easy to drink, with five varietals in the range - Semillon, Unwooded Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz Viognier.

Midnight Leap
One moonlit night in the late 1960’s, impassioned winemaker Murray Tyrrell leapt the fence of a neighbouring winegrower to secure a cutting of the then rare Chardonnay grape variety.
That mission, which lead to Tyrrell’s releasing Australia’s first commercial Chardonnay in 1971, is now wine industry folklore, and the wines we have made since are part of Australia’s rich wine history.
The Midnight Leap range is the legacy of Murray Tyrrell’s belief in the Australian wine industry, with a selection of fruit from prestige
vineyards across the country providing his all important criteria: flavour.
