Mark Richardson

Red Winemaker

Mark Richardson is a born and bred Hunter Valley man. He joined Tyrrell’s in 1994 as the red wine expansion phase in McLaren Vale and Heathcote began.

Mark’s first working vintage in the wine industry was for Allandale Winery where he worked from 1991 to 1993. He has also worked at Domaine Chandon in the Yarra Valley and spent four months at Chianti Rufina in Tuscany, Italy.

After completing his studies at Roseworthy Agricultural College in Adelaide in 1993, Mark began working for Tyrrell’s Wines as the Assistant Winemaker until November 1999. Today, he is in charge of all red wine production at Tyrrell’s, and as such is the custodian of the big oak vats.

In recent years, the focus at Tyrrell’s Wines has been on improving, and in some cases, reinventing the classic regional styles and single vineyard sites. Particular emphasis has been on the Hunter Valley Vat 9, Stevens, Four Acres and Brokenback Shiraz. Regional diversity has included the Rufus Stone Shiraz from both the McLaren Vale vineyards in South Australia and the Heathcote region in Victoria.
