In the beginning...
In 1962 Murray Tyrrell began labelling his best wines under the Private Bin label. The wines were numbered after the vat within which they matured.
These wines were only made available to a select few customers who visited our winery in Pokolbin.
The philosophy behind these wines was that generally the Hunter Valley produces wines which improve with bottle age.
Tyrrell's Private Bin range is, after 30 years, among the most highly awarded wines in Australia with well over 1000 medals and sixty trophies.
Nowadays only the Vat 47 Hunter Chardonnay, Vat 1 Semillon, Vat 9 Shiraz, Vat 6 Pinot Noir and Vat 8 Shiraz Cabernet are available through retailers (and only in very limited numbers and after bottle aging).
However... we have kept over ten Private Bin wines exclusively for Private Bin Members. These range from exquisite Shiraz's, Semillons or Chardonnays from extremely low yielding original blocks, to drink-now varietal wine styles. None are available through liquor retailers.
