Merlot
Merlot originated in the Bordeaux region of France and is now widely planted throughout Australia. Merlot grows best in cool to warm climates. In these conditions the fruit retains higher natural acidity and develops stronger fruit characters. Green characters dominate the flavour profile in the cooler climates. Most merlot wine is made to be drunk young. Merlot made unblended offers a soft, earthy, fruity taste, a dark, rich colour, and a simple and direct aroma. It is most commonly blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. At Tyrrell’s Wines, we create this blend as well as make a straight Merlot with cherry and plum fruit flavours, subtle oak and a smooth finish.
