Shiraz

Also known as Syrah, Shiraz comes from the Rhône Valley, France. It has become one of Australia’s most important red wine varieties because it yields well under a range of climatic conditions, taking warmth in its stride. Often Shiraz is partially fermented in oak barrels allowing it to build flavour complexity and making it a medium to full bodied wine. Some wines high in alcohol may also impart spicy and hot characteristics. Tyrrell’s Wines create a range of shiraz wines from the Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale and Heathcote regions. Shiraz from the cooler regions consist of black pepper, spice, liquorice and black fruit flavours. As the climate warms, pepperiness diminishes and sweet, warm berry-fruit flavours take over.
