Fortified

Wine fortification occurs when spirit has been added to a base wine, raising the alcohol level. High strength spirit imparts little extra character, while other spirits can often add significant nutty and almond tones. After fortification, the wine is generally left to mature in small oak barrels, sometimes for decades, maturing into complex, aromatic wines, with immense depth and concentration of flavour. Tyrrell’s Wines make a fortified wine style known as Tawny. This fortified wine is cellared for many years developing wonderful complexity and smoothness.
