E.G 'Dan' Tyrrell
1871
Edward George 'Dan' Tyrrell is born in Pokolbin to Edward & Susan Tyrrell. He is second oldest & one of 10 children. Avery Tyrrell is youngest (father of Murray Tyrrell).
1887
Edward relinquishes day to day running of Ashmans Winery to Dan at age 15. Brother Avery eventually manages the vineyard properties. Dan begins drinking Claret aged 14.
1891
Dan makes his first wine at aged 18 years - instead of selling the grapes.
Dan meets Philobert Terrier who ran Kaludah Winery in the Lochinvar region, Hunter Valley. Terrier was a contemporary of James Busby & together they had perfected grape varietal choices to suit soil & weather conditions.
Dan learnt a great deal about winemaking's finer points from Terrier which set the high standards for Tyrrell's in years to come.
Dan takes over the running of the Kaludah Winery after Terrier leaves to establish his own St Helena Winery. Dan runs the not inconsiderable Kaludah Winery & its vineyards concurrently with Tyrrell's Ashmans operations.
Well known winemaking peers at the time in the Hunter Valley were Dr Henry Lindeman, Maurice O'Shea, Audrey Wilkinson & James King.
Dan was a tall, spare framed man standing 6' 5" tall and never married, becoming affectionately known as 'Uncle Dan'.
Wine made by Dan was sold to Maurice O'Shea of Mt Pleasant winery, where Maurice would act as merchant & either blend it with his own or release it with a distinguishing name or code like 'TY'.
1955
Dan falls from a tall ladder whilst working in the winery. After the accident Dan begins handing the management of Tyrrell's to nephew Murray.
April 1959
Uncle Dan dies from a heart attack aged 88 at his residence at Tyrrell's Ashmans Winery.
